Melamed, Eliezer
Eliezer, son of Chana and Chaim Melamed, was born in 1926 in the city of Rovno, Poland. In 1936, when he was 10 years old, he immigrated with his parents to Israel. Eliezer completed his studies at the elementary school in Haifa but was forced to work to help his parents in their poor economic situation and completed his education in evening classes. From childhood, he was a member of Hashomer Hatza’ir. Eliezer was a member of the Haganah from the time he was in the youth movement, and from the beginning of the War of Independence he served in the Carmeli Brigade and participated in escorting convoys. He took part in the battle of Mishmar Ha’emek, in the breakthrough to the besieged Kibbutz Yechiam and in the defense of Ramat Yochanan. During the occupation of Haifa, he was wounded and sent to the military hospital in Beit Oren, but before he recovered and still lame, he set out to conquer Acre. Afterward he served in the Upper Galilee and fell in the Manara sector, on 20 Tishrei, October 23, 1948, and was buried in the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
