Meir, Ben-Zion


Born in the town of Czernowitz (then the capital of the Bukovina region of Romania), he was born on the 9th of Adar 5708 in the city of Czernowitz. In 1944, he sailed to Israel in the first convoy of Youth Aliyah. When the War of Independence began, he became one of the first to serve in the Palmach. Ben-Zion took a course and served as a paramedic in Kfar Bilu. He was transferred to Jerusalem and served as a machine gunner in the ranks of the Harel Brigade. Towards the end of April 1948, a “Yevusi” operation was carried out in the Jerusalem area, intended to create a territorial contiguity within the city and between Jerusalem and the northern communities. Ben-Zion fell in this battle fell on the 14th of Nissan 5708 (April 23, 1948). He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
