Matzliah, Zion


Zion was born in Jerusalem on December 14, 1953, to his parents Yona and Sarah, completed his studies at the Beit Yaakov elementary school and continued his studies at the Ort Kennedy vocational school in the field of automotive mechanics. He was well-behaved, responsible and punctual, and all of these qualities were evident in his military service, and in November 1971 he was recruited to the IDF, And thanks to his professional training, he was placed as a mechanic in the Ordnance Corps. At his request, he was transferred to a workshop as part of a paratroopers’ unit. From there he went to a drivers’ course and afterwards to a paratroop course, after which he asked to be transferred to a combat unit, but his request was not given to him. In 1972 he took part in a raid across the border, in the paratroopers’ battalion to which he was attached. At the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, he was apprehended at the request of his battalion, as a driver of a half-track of mortars, on October 12, 1973, A shell hit a half-track in which a shrapnel penetrated his chest and was killed on the spot. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant. On the 4th of Elul 5734 (August 22, 1974) he was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on Mount Herzl and was followed by a father, mother, two brothers and four sisters.
