Margovski (Argov), Avinoam
Son of Zvi and Chanah. A grandson of Avraham Yitzhak Margovsky, one of the founders of the village of Metula and one of the first guards and defenders in Israel. He was born on the 27th of Adar, March 19, 1928 in Metula. He excelled in his studies from the “Ahad Ha’am” elementary school in Tel Aviv to the end of his studies at the Balfour Gymnasium. After completing the Gymnasium, he spent his year in Nutrat, where he was active in cultural life. After completing his military service, he was a graduate of the Law and Economics School. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was one of the first volunteers before his turn. It was written that his goal was “to strengthen our youth and to shape the spirit and image of the Haganah.” During the Legion attack in the valley, he threw the first grenade at the enemy. He participated in all the Negev operations. He was able to be in command and cool and alert in difficult situations. To his friends and subordinates, he became a brother and teacher. He raised their spirits, responded to their complaints with stories of heroism and sacrifice of the first settlers (heard by members of his family). In every situation, he made an effort to guide his men, to enrich their knowledge of the place’s connection with the nation’s past. Out of humility he refused to accept degrees, but in the end, he responded to the pleas of his commanders and agreed to join an officer’s course. In the course of his duties, he was seriously injured and four or five days later, on the 13th of Av, August 8, 1949, he died of his wounds. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nachalat Yitzchok.
