Machati, Meir


Son of Fania and Yoseph, was born on the 25th of Shevat, February 23, 1930 in Haifa. After completing the Tel Nordoi elementary school in Tel Aviv in 1945, he began to study in the Tietz Yagur vocational school and joined the Haganah there. He was a member of a Palmach training group of the “Mahanot Ha’olim.” At the beginning of the War of Independence, he participated with his father in the defense of Tel Aviv. He was only 17. He left the group in February 1948. He completed a machine gun course and served in the Yiftah Brigade.
He participated in the liberation of Tiberias, and later went up with his unit to Mount Canaan. In one of his letters to his parents, he praised the heroic behavior of a friend. Then he thanked the doctor for his dedicated work, and his friends for their help and asked them to continue on their way to the lofty goal in which they went. While working as a machine gunner, he was killed in the battle for the liberation of Safed on the 1st of Iyar, May 10, 1948. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Sefad.
