Ma’atuk, Avraham (Carmel)


Son of Yosef and Tova. Born on 14.1.1949 in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. He is a member of a family of rabbis on the father’s and mother’s side In 1951, when Abraham was two and a half years old, the family immigrated to Israel. The absorption was difficult for him, just as his parents were not easy: the new place of residence in the tent and hut and the new tongue made it difficult. When he reached school age, he entered the Yesod Hatorah school in Nahalat Yehuda and completed his studies there. Afterward, he studied at the “Amal” vocational school in Rehovot. His habit was to work a day and study in the evening. He belonged to the Hanoar Haoved movement and joined a circle that adopted the idea of ​​cooperation. Was a modest guy, did not go great, did not look up to what was not within reach, good-hearted and kind, knew to laugh and laugh; When the palate was needed, it was also deep and quiet. He did not forget his Talmud, and at the same time he liked craftsmanship, and this was evident in the models of the planes he had built and his leisure time – in photography and development. He was drafted into the IDF in November 1966, served in the Armored Corps and proudly spoke about his service in the combat corps, but Avraham did not manage to finish his regular service, because in the meantime the Six-Day War broke out and he fell on the first day For its battles, on 26 June 1967, in a battle in Rafah, when its tank hit a direct hit while inside it. He was laid to rest at the military emergency cemetery in Bari and was later transferred to the eternal rest of the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. His name was mentioned in Shabtay Tevet’s book “Exposed in the Turret”.
