Lopez, Yaakov


Yaakov, son of Devora and Rabbi Eliyahu Lopez, was born in 5678 in Jerusalem and was educated in the Talmud Torah and at the “Porat Yosef” Yeshivah. During the bloody riots of 1936-1939, when the underground began to break the restraint and reacted to the Arab assassinations of counter-assassinations, Yaakov was imprisoned by the British in the Acre fortress. Over the years he married a wife and had a son and a daughter. For his livelihood he distributed the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, and his ambition was to issue a Jerusalem daily newspaper. On the 11th of Tammuz 5708 (18.7.1948), when he went on a tour of Ein Kerem immediately after its conquest, he stepped on a mine and was killed. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
