Levi, Sasson (Shafik)

Sasson, son of Lulu and Yona-Itzhak Levi, was born on October 28, 1925, in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. He made aliyah in 1934. The Palmach refused to accept him because of his young age, but after he insisted, he was sent to the Haganah Intelligence Service, thanks to his command of the Arabic language, leaving mines in the no-man’s-land near Jerusalem, and carrying out daring acts of sabotage in the Lev of enemy strongholds. He participated in the battles of Mamilla, Katamon, Abu Tor and more. Before the conquest of Mount Zion, Sasson was sent to eliminate a dangerous enemy position and succeeded in an action that opened the way to the occupiers of the place. He was critically wounded on the eve of the cease-fire, on the eve of Succoth (17 October 1948) and on the way to the hospital died of his wounds. He was buried in Sheikh Bader. After his fall, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. On the 17th of Elul 5710 (August 30, 1950) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
