Levi, Nissim


Son of Regina and David, he was born in Iraq in 1943 and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1951. The family settled in Magdiel. Nissim attended elementary school in Magdiel, but due to the difficult financial situation of the family and the many children, Nissim was forced to stop studying. He began working to support and help his parents. For two years Nissim worked as a farm laborer in Magdiel, and for two more years he worked as a locksmith in Ramatayim. Along with his work, he learned the boxing profession at evening classes. He was a member of the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed movement in Magdiel. Nissim was drafted into the IDF at the beginning of November 1960. After completing his basic training, Nissim underwent a course for drivers, a course for half-track drivers and a course for armored personnel carriers, and served as an armored vehicle driver in the IAF. Nissim was sent to a course in order to complete his education. He began working as a truck driver in a wholesale market in Tel Aviv. Nissim was a pleasant and loving man, loved by people, and he offered his help to anyone who asked without hesitation. He participated in the Six-Day War, the War of Attrition and the Yom Kippur War. On 18 Tamuz, 9 July 1982, Corporal Nissim was killed while serving. He was buried in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. He left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter, parents, three brothers and five sisters. Throughout his years of service Nissim was a dedicated soldier and a loyal friend. He always did his job quietly, quickly and modestly. His comrades in the company’s armored personnel carrier knew that it was possible to trust Nissim in times of peace and war.”
