Levi, Eliyahu

Eliyahu, son of Korin and David, was born on the 28th of Tishrei 5714 (28.9.1953) in Acre. He completed elementary school at the Gordon Elementary School, and then continued at the Darski High School, where he studied for three years. He spent his last year in high school in Kiryat Haim, in the theoretical track. Elijah was a model student, a student whom every teacher wishes he would have many like him. He was a good and loyal friend and was always ready to help his friends. Before the exams, the house was full of friends who had come to help with him, and he, with his shy smile, marveled at his ability to learn and teach. At every parents’ meeting, Father Korn was a teacher, because Eli was the best of the class. Living conditions at home were not easy, but Eli found a way to devote himself to studies without burdening the family. He always found his way and cultivated his dream – continuing studies at the Technion in Haifa, in the field of structural engineering. Elam was tall and handsome, with a penetrating gaze and a slightly shy smile. He respected his parents with all his Lev and was attached to them with every fiber of his soul. He was a loyal and good friend and a dear brother. Every leisure hour devoted to reading in Hebrew and English, he loved to listen to music and also to play sports. He was one of the best players on the basketball team at school and played volleyball and soccer. Eliahu was drafted into the IDF at the end of November 1971. After completing his basic training, he completed a battalion training course and served in the Golani Brigade’s First Scout Battalion, and in August 1973 his request for an officer’s course was accepted. To complete a number of matriculation exams, so that he could be admitted to the Technion, and he loved the service in the IDF with all his Lev and in his letters home. When he came home for a vacation, the house was filled with light. Two weeks before the Yom Kippur War broke out, Eli was stationed with his unit in the Gaza Strip. A dream he had dreamed left him with such a deep impression that he called his mother and told her about him. In his dream, he traveled far away, and the mother, after hearing this, had a deep Lev for her, and she was filled with a deep concern that her shadow did not leave her even when he telephoned her on the eve of Yom Kippur and announced that he was going on a long vacation. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, his brigade was on the Golan Heights. In the terrible battles in which the positions on Mount Hermon were abandoned, and in the battles that followed, he excelled in his great ability and devotion to the cause. He knew what he was fighting for and did all the tasks he was assigned with exemplary devotion. On the 22nd of Tishrei 5740 (22.10.1973), he was brought to rest in the cemetery in Nahariya, leaving behind his parents, two brothers and two sisters. In his letter to the grieving family, his commander wrote: “The Yom Kippur War was undoubtedly the most difficult in Israel’s wars and there was a war over our lives in this country. The Battle of the Hermon was perhaps the most difficult battle in this war. Your son, who fell in this battle, fought with his friends as one who knows for what he fought, courageously and heroically, with dedication and sacrifice. We do not try, because we can not comfort you with the loss of your son, even though we, his comrades in the First Bombers Battalion, also have the feeling of losing a son of a warrior. May his memory be blessed. “Words in memory of Elijah are included in the book” Not the Words Speak of Death, “which was published in memory of the fallen soldiers of the First Pioneers Battalion of the Golani Brigade.
