Leizer, Shaul-Haim (Sydney)

Born in Toronto, Canada, on November 10, 1929, son of-Siddishe was educated in a high school and grew up in abundance, and was very fond of his friends because of his good qualities. And because of his youth he was unable to participate in the Second World War against the Nazis and was put in a civil flight school in preparation for an active service when his time came, and when the War of Independence broke out he told his parents that it was a Jewish war and every young Jew to do his duty. He obtained his parents’ consent to volunteer for Machal (foreign volunteers) and to come to Israel. When he arrived in Israel, he volunteered for the IDF, was assigned to the 72nd Brigade of the 7th Brigade in an English-speaking company, encouraged his Canadian friends and instilled in them a spirit of love and devotion to Israel’s war and suffering without complaint. Shaul Hayim fell in battle on September 7, 1948, when he and his comrades repulsed a counterattack by the Arabs who tried to conquer Mount Kabul in the Galilee. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Nahariya.
