Leibowitz, Yitzhak


Son of Chaya and Arieh Leib, was born in 1926 and immigrated to Israel in 1946 on the illegal immigrant ship Haganah. Between these two dates is the story of the life of exile of a pleasant young man, who completed elementary school and studied the carpentry work, stood during the Holocaust on the fate of his people and aspired to Zion. In Israel he worked as an agricultural laborer in Ramat Hasharon. In January 1948 he enlisted, trained near Netanya and was attached to the Alexandroni battalion. He was a member of a company that participated in many battles on the “Triangle” front. His battalion reinforced the 7th Brigade in the “son of-Nun Aleph” operation for the breakthrough to Jerusalem and he had to conquer Latrun. The battalion’s fighters encountered better enemy forces and had to retreat.Yitzchak fell in This battle on the 17th of Iyar 5708 (May 26, 1948). On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
