Lavie (Levinthal), Ze’ev


Zeev, son of Rivka and Yaakov, was born on the 4 th of February 1943 in Petah Tikva. After his family settled in Moshav Batzron, he attended the joint elementary school in Gan Yavneh and Lebetzron. Afterward, he continued to study at the “Kanot” agricultural high school. In 1960 he moved to the military boarding school where he studied until the time of his enlistment in the IDF, and during his service in the Gadna, the strong connection between Ze’ev and the sea was established. Ze’ev was drafted into the IDF at the end of May 1961 and assigned to the Navy. After basic training, he was trained to serve as a steam engine mechanic and was assigned to serve on the Eilat naval vessel. His commanders noted him as an excellent professional and a disciplined and disciplined soldier, fulfilling his role with precision and perfection. He was accepted by his commanders and Ehud for his crewmates. At the end of October 1963, Ze’ev was discharged from the regular army and assigned to the reserve unit of the Navy. During his military service in the reserve unit, he joined the Merchant Navy. In 1963 he joined the Merchant Navy and served for three years as a mechanic on a merchant ship. At the time he worked as a chemist, he combined his love of the sea with his professional skills and skill as a mechanic. This period was rich in experiences, since he visited many countries and saw many new places. Ze’ev was very attached to his home and family. Even when he was away from them on his voyages in the seas, he maintained correspondence. He spent his vacations at home and took the time to work in the family farm. Thus the work in the agricultural farm was his second love. He did not know how to deal with the cultivation and processing of the family farm. After the Six-Day War, Ze’ev was transferred to the Armored Corps and was trained as a liaison. He was assigned to a reserve unit of the Armored Corps, and during his service he participated in the battles of the War of Attrition. Ze’ev married his girlfriend Zemira and together established their home in Betzron. In June 1973, four months before the Yom Kippur War broke out, his daughter Bracha was born. Ze’ev, who was the head of a devoted family and a loving father, did not manage to enjoy the pleasures of family life. His fall in battle took him away from his family and from his daughter, whom she did not know. During the Yom Kippur War, his battalion participated in the battle against the Egyptians in Sinai. In a battle that took place on the 7th of Tishrei 5734 (7.10.1973) in the area between Romney and Beluzah, in the northern sector of the Sinai, his battalion fought with the force of an Egyptian commando. In this battle, Ze’ev was mortally wounded. He died of his wounds on the 19th of Tishrei 5734 (October 15, 1973) and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Betzron. He left behind a wife and daughter, parents and brother. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the battalion commander, Lt. Col. Assaf Yaguri, wrote: “Staff Sergeant Ze’ev served as a liaison officer in an armored unit under my command. He was an outstanding soldier and an excellent contact person, who performed all the tasks entrusted to him faithfully and accurately. His commanders and friends loved him as a fighter and as a man, and his fall was a heavy loss to our unit. “His family donated a Torah scroll to the synagogue in Betzron.
