Landau, Dov (Bero)


Son of Mindel and David, was born on 24 August 1924 in the town of Sturliu-Heli, Hungary. Dov received a high school education, was a Zionist from his youth and spent a long time as a counselor in a children’s institution of the Bnei Akiva movement. After fleeing the horrors of war and destruction, he immigrated to Israel in 1946 on a Haganah ship and when he arrived he joined the “Achdut” group of Hapoel Hamizrachi. After a while he settled in Jerusalem and worked as a locksmith. Upon his arrival he immediately joined the Haganah and underwent all military training. With the outbreak of the War of Independence he enlisted among the first to defend his city and was among the defenders of the Yemin Moshe neighborhood. From there he was sent to Atarot, besieged and cut off, and when he was forced to evacuate, he moved to Neve Ya’akov. When he returned to Jerusalem he took part in the fighting in Har Zion, Mucarra, and more. On June 9, 1948, he was seriously wounded in Deir Abu Tor, Jerusalem, and two days later, on Wednesday, June 11, 1948, died of his wounds and was buried in Sanhedria. To rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
