Kurtzberg, Gabriel


Gavriel (Gabi), the eldest son of Alfie and Shlomo, was born on 22.1.1951 in Kibbutz Nachshonim. Gabriel was drafted into the IDF in the middle of February 1970 and volunteered for the Armored Corps, where he learned in command of tank commanders and graduated with honors (95), in which he was known as an excellent soldier who carried out all his duties. In August 1973, when he was discharged, Gabi told his parents that he wanted to learn engineering from the army, In preparation for his studies, he began to learn English, returned to the kibbutz, worked as an agriculturist, and began planning his life The Yom Kippur War put an end to all dreams, the war broke out and the IDF forces fought bitter battles – and my back on the kibbutz, indignant at being “forgotten.” Thirty hours later, he phoned his superiors and said goodbye to his parents. “He went without enthusiasm, but with the recognition that he must act like that, Gabi was not a military man.” He was sent to the northern front and fought there as a tank commander. His comrades in battle, who tried to organize the remainder of the force and urged the fighters to move forward. On the 12th of Tishrei 5740 (October 12, 1973), Lieutenant Gabriel was killed in a bloody battle in the area of ​​Beit Jazr and brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. Survived by his parents, brother and sister.
