Krupal, Eliahu-Yehuda

Eliahu, son of Tzila and Menahem, was born on the 18th of Shvat 5710 (5.2.1950) in Jerusalem. He completed his elementary studies at the religious-state school for boys in Jerusalem and attended high school at Yeshivat Bnei Akiva “Netiv Meir” in Jerusalem. Eli, as his family and friends called him, was a good student. His talents were particularly prominent in the real professions, arithmetic at elementary school, mathematics, physics, and chemistry in high school. At the same time he was a naughty and a lot of pranks. He was a member of the Bnei Akiva youth movement from the fourth grade in elementary school until his enlistment in the IDF, and was a sports enthusiast and played basketball in the teams of the schools he studied in. He passed a pilot course and was accepted for a course. But since he saw it as only a test of his physical and intellectual abilities, he left the course and moved to the Armored Corps. After basic training and teaching subjects, he served for a year in a tank crew that participated in the battles of the War of Attrition at the “dock post” on the banks of the Suez Canal. After completing a course for tank commanders and officers’ courses, he served as tank commander in the canal area, a peak period in the War of Attrition, and a few days later he was hit in the head and before returning to the canal he claimed he did not feel comfortable at home, While his friends fought in the front, but his body was not burdened and he was transferred to serve in the Armored Corps, where he was involved in tank development and combat doctrine, and he volunteered to serve in the army. Rejected the proposal and chose to study and advance in physics and engineering, and not in the military field Despite his knowledge of the military material, both technically and theoretically, he was modest and simple, and he knew how to deal with his actions, and he found the golden path between being a religious person And he believes that he is meticulous in observing all the situations and conditions, and being an excellent commander, a good soldier and a good friend, and his devotion to religion has become a common name, commanders, soldiers and friends appreciate this combination and often envy his faith. Thanks to his professional knowledge and his healthy senses, he gained the trust of his soldiers. He found himself familiar with the field at night, as in the daytime. When commanders came to instruct tank systems, armored personnel carriers and communications officers were more knowledgeable than the instructors and explained to them things they did not know, as an insistent commander who also noted the smallest details of the execution, maintenance and training, He did not like to wear a rank with his subordinates, and was always with his soldiers, not with the other officers, and his soldiers loved him and saw him as “one of us.” Eli took care of his staff and every problem He solved with a smile, the same captivating smile that remained in the course of incidents and battles, The combination of a rich personality, depth, faith and strictness, along with disdain for convention and a bit of brateness, maintained his mental strength even in times of emergency and pressure.Never seemed to get angry and even when the cannons thundered he continued to speak and give orders in moderation and silence, Volunteered to serve in reserve duty in a special volunteer unit, which was designed for special combat missions, with the clear knowledge that there would not always be a way back, or as Eli’s definition, when he left the house on Yom Kippur for war: “Do not worry,Only makes small wars. “An innocent definition, which because of the secrecy of the unit, its members and acquaintances did not know that it defined the unit’s unique fighting character, carried out the tasks that were assigned to it thoroughly and was evaluated by commanders and soldiers as a commander and as an excellent combatant. His discharge from the IDF and the opening of the academic year at the university taught me at the Center for Pre-Academic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At the same time he worked on models for inventions he invented in the military and civilian fields. In 1975 he began his studies in mathematics and physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and was one of the outstanding students in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and was awarded the Excellence Award for his achievements in studies. He deserves extra excellence if he could continue his studies. Despite his propensity for the practical aspects of physics, he showed great interest and knowledge in theoretical questions of mathematics and physics, and he initiated and wrote with a classmate a volume of lectures entitled “Introduction to Applied Mathematics.” He initiated and participated in the translation of a book on Galim. Eli has forged bad relationships with all his contemporaries in the departments he studied and with many others. He was always full of confidence, surrounded by friends when he was at the center of the party. He was willing to help every friend and everyone loved him and trusted him. When administrative and educational problems arose, he would naturally present, without being selected or asked, the students’ demands and the conclusion he obtained was acceptable to all. Despite the heavy load of studies and examinations, including long periods of active reserve duty, Eli did not neglect his hobbies and other interests. He continued to play sports, swam daily in the university pool and played basketball at every opportunity. Was interested in politics and events in the country and was well versed in this area. His views and outlooks were anchored in the history and tradition of Judaism. Optimism was his way of life and the eternal smile of a kind of trademark. On the 19th of Tishrei 5734 (19.10.1973) west of the Suez Canal, Eli fought in his unit as a sergeant commander during the battle of Serfaum, while he was wounded in the head. Or to find a way to evacuate them from the center of the enemy compound, while he was moving toward the target, under a bombardment and a shower of bullets, was hit in the chest and killed and brought to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl. After his fall, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and the family published a booklet in his memory, a list of his memory was published in a booklet published by the unit, In the book “Nizkor” – a memorial book for students, employees and teachers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who fell in the Yom Kippur War.
