Kornitzer, Bela (“Baloonat”)

Kornitzer, Bela (“Baloonat”)

A daughter of Israel and a white wife. She was born in Istanbul, Turkey on July 17, 1939. In 1949, she immigrated to Israel with her family and studied at the Kiryat Shalom elementary school. Bella was very good at her studies and when she graduated she was awarded a scholarship to continue high school. She attended the ORT vocational high school in Tel Aviv. Bella was very talented in all aspects of theoretical studies, and excelled in handcraft and embroidery, modeling and sewing. Bella was drafted into the IDF in mid-July 1957 and was assigned to the liaison corps, where she served in the ranks of the Staff Sergeant, the Sergeant, and the Chief Rabbi. Later, she was given an officer and she reached the rank of captain. Bella had a great will to live and great self-respect. Despite the illness that had ravaged her and ruined her body, Bella, right up to the last months of her life, continued to do her part in the army. She was a dedicated wife and mother, and as much as she could, she tried to hide her illness from all those around her. On December 19, 1971, she died at the time of her service, leaving a husband and daughter to be laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
