Kornfrecht, Abraham-Isaac

The only son of Tamar and Arieh-Moshe was born on May 19, 1930 in Ostila, Poland, and grew up in Kfar Saba, where he arrived with his parents on June 7, 1934, at the age of four. He studied at the local elementary school and when he completed his studies he studied mechanics and worked at the “Egged” garage in Tel Aviv. In his free time, he liked to play chess. He was a strong and cheerful lad, a member of the Bnei Akiva youth movement, and from a young age he was a member of the Haganah, about four years before his enlistment. During the War of Independence he was recruited to the Alexandroni Brigade and served as a translator. With the entry of the Arab Legion into the fighting, Jerusalem’s situation worsened and the road to it was cut off by the Legion system in Latrun. The “son of-Nun A” operation was planned for the breakthrough and its battalion was reinforced by the 7th Brigade in this operation and it was ordered to conquer Latrun. The attacking force encountered better enemy forces and had to retreat. This battle fell on the 17th of Iyar 5708 (May 26, 1948). On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was transferred to the eternal military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
