Kopelowitz, Shmaryahu


Son of Tzipora and Yaakov was born on February 2, 1912, in the city of Tomashpol, Russia, a descendant of a family of Hasidim and rabbis, whose attribution extends to the Baal Shem Tov, who spent his childhood in a religious environment, He joined the Zionist pioneering movement, and when he arrived in Israel on January 1, 1982, he completely broke off ties with religious life. He left Yeshiva in Tiberias, went to work in the Hapoel HaTza’ir printing press in Tel Aviv, And since then he connected his fate to the realization of the kibbutz. during the War of Independence he was commander of a region in the area of his kibbutz and later commander of a company in the Carmeli Brigade, in the battles of the Carmel and the Western Galilee, (September 5, 1948), when he saw the enemy advancing toward his positions, he approached himself personally, was wounded in the leg but managed to throw a grenade. After that, he was hit in the head and chest and died instantly. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Beit Oren. After his fall, he was promoted to captain. His kibbutz issued in his memory a memorial booklet: Shmaryahu.
