Klugman, Leo

He lived in Cleveland, Ohio, and was active in the local department of Poalei Zion. During the First World War, he volunteered for the Jewish Legion – the 39th Battalion of the King’s Rifles in the British Army. The purpose of the battalions was to participate in the conquest of Palestine by the Turks. He arrived with his unit to Palestine and fought in front of Jericho and the occupation of a-Salt in Transjordan. At the beginning of October 1918, after the battalion crossed the Jordan on its way to Jerusalem, Leo was attacked and wounded. He was hospitalized in Jerusalem and died two days later, on 1 Cheshvan, October 7, 1918. He was laid to rest in the British military cemetery on Mount Scopus, and his name was commemorated in the Yizkor book of the Jabotinsky Institute and the book “Battalion House” in Avihail.
