Kess, Shalom
Son of Pesia and Henoch (Henich), was born on the 24th of Elul 5623 (24.8.1923) in the city of Podolochisk, Poland. Even as a child, he excelled in elementary school, where he completed nine classes. When he was 13 years old, his parents sent him to study in Yeshivah, where he was among the best students. He joined the Mizrachi movement and his ambition was to immigrate to Israel. When he returned from the Yeshiva, the Second World War broke out, and when the Soviet territories occupied the Ukraine, he continued to study on his own and diligently studied Hebrew, Bible, and history. He joined the “Hanoar Hazioni” kibbutz in the city of Szczecin and together with the members of the kibbutz he crossed the border to Germany and stayed there for a year and a half, and was also a member of the Zionist pioneering movement and wanted to immigrate to Israel and join one of the agricultural points. The hardships of the illegal immigrants to the ship “Exodus from Europe 5707” and after many wanderings came to the shores of Israel on 12.3 1948. Upon his arrival he enlisted and served in the “Kiryati” brigade. In the army he was discovered in his talents and sent to the machine-gunners course. Since then he served as a machine gunner in his department and participated in all combat operations. Among his friends he was known for his good qualities and good friend. Shalom was killed in the “Danny” operation on Wednesday, July 11, 1948, in a battle in the area of Beit-Nabala, where he was laid to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
