While serving in the army, Shalom maintained close contact with his family and came home at every opportunity to be with his parents, and to help his sister. At the end of June 1973 he was rushed to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and diagnosed with a malignant disease. He died at Tel Hashomer Hospital on November 12, 1973. Survived by his parents, sister and brother. His family donated a Torah scroll to his soul.
