Kazaz, Meir
Son of Sarah and Shaul, was born in 1927 in Tiberias. Meir joined the Haganah and was among the liberators of his city Tiberias – the first city to be liberated in the nascent State of Israel. At the time of the establishment of the Israel Defense Forces, he joined the Givati Brigade and moved to the southern front, where he participated in the battle for Ashdod and Beit-Afa near Negba. In that unit, his cousin and his close friend Efraim served with him, who told their commanders that they would serve shoulder to shoulder. The day before the second truce came into effect, Operation “Death to the Intruder” took place, in an attempt to break through the Negev route through the Egyptian lines that were set up in the western Negev. Meir and his cousin Efraim attacked the village of Beit Afa. During the battle Meir was mortally wounded and died. When Ephraim heard his cries, he was also killed by a series of bullets. Meir and his cousin fell in battle on the 11th of Tammuz 5708 (18.7.1948). Meir was buried in the Be’er Tuvia cemetery. On the 28th of Sivan 5713 (11.6.1953) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
