Katz, Dan
Born on the 6th of Iyar, May 8, 1927, in Kibbutz Mizra in the central Jezreel Valley. He completed a commanders’ course and guided the younger classes in training and sports. In the winter of 1948, when the War of Independence broke out, he served with his unit in the southern Negev to protect the water pipe. On May 13,1948 he went with his platoon to escort a convoy of reinforcements to Kfar Darom, which was cut off. On the way, they were attacked by a large Egyptian force equipped with cannons, and the convoy’s armored cars were hit. Only his car managed to reach the fence of the farm. When he was kicked out of the car, he was hit in the knee. In this situation he continued to command his platoon and manage its retreat. After a great loss of blood, he was taken to the village of Kfar Darom, where he died on the 6th of Iyar (May 15, 1948.) He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Mizra.
