Katz, Avraham-Yaakov
Avraham-Yaakov, the only son of Bracha and Shmuel Katz, was born in 1928 in the city of Visoki-Litovsk, Poland, and immigrated to Israel with his parents, who were among the first residents of Holon. He studied electricity and helped his electrician father install electricity in the homes in Holon. Avraham-Yaakov was a Haganah operative in Holon and served in the Givati Brigade’s infantry unit of the Givati Brigade. He was the first to fall on guard duty in this area. On the night of 1 Tevet, 14.12.1948, he set out with his unit to capture Givat Hahirba in Tel a-Rish, but they were forced to withdraw. Avraham-Yaakov was hit and fell, but due to the heavy fire, his friends did not succeed in extracting his body. The memory of the fallen members there was called “Tel Giborim.” After an intensive investigation of 11 months, his body was identified and on 1.12.1948, he was brought to rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak military cemetery.
