Katan, Eliyahu (Eli)
Eliyahu, son of Esther and Chaim Katan, was born on December 15, 1927 in Aleppo, Syria. He attended a school called “Kol Israel Haverim”, studied languages and read books. In 1945, at the age of 18, he immigrated to Israel, lived with his family in Tel Aviv and was hired as a clerk in a bookshop and also worked part-time for the newspaper “Al Hamishmar”, in accordance with his political leanings. From the beginning of the War of Independence Eliyahu participated in escorting convoys. He joined the Palmach in March 1948, participated in the conquest of the Castel and the battles in Ma’ale Hahamisha, Kiryat Anavim and Jerusalem, and was a quartermaster in the “Portzim” battalion in the Harel Brigade. On the 23rd of Tishrai, October 26, 1948, he was killed in a road accident during a trip from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and was brought to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
