Karta, Yosef

Yosef, son of Rumiya and Yichye-Zecharya Karta, was born in 1932 in the Old City of Jerusalem. Immediately upon the outbreak of the War of Independence he joined the Haganah. He played the role of liaison, showed courage in his position and excelled during the attack on the “Houses of Warsaw.” He was captured by the British when he transferred equipment to an attacking HISH post. The British beat him brutally and put him in a “Kishle” (prison). With the intervention of the national institutions he was released. He needed medical treatment and was transferred to the new city and here he served as a liaison. Under a barrage of shells, he gathered the wounded on the street. Yosef wanted to contribute his part in a real war and joined the “Yehonatan” company in the “Moriah” battalion of the Etzioni Brigade. He brought energy and life into the company, filled his duties with joy and devotion and went into battle with a brave Lev. After two months of service, he received a short vacation and went home. On the way to the Katamon neighborhood, a shell hit him and he was taken to the hospital. Two days later, on the 5th of Tammuz 5708 (12 July 1948), Yosef died. He was buried in Sheikh Bader A. On September 10, 1950, he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
