Karniel (Terreller), Shalom

Son of Hinda and Shimon, he was born on July 20, 1912, in the city of Cracow, Poland, in a Hasidic-Zionist home. He joined the Hashomer Hadati movement and was active in his town and surrounding districts, He later left his studies at the university and devoted himself entirely to the movement’s work because he saw his role in disseminating the idea of ​​the religious kibbutz and always emphasized the connection between Jewish ethics and the idea of ​​the group. Between 1936-1938, he worked devotedly in the leadership of the “Hashomer Hadati” in Warsaw, where he dealt with matters of education and training, was a member of the Ahlu organization of the Hashomer Hadati periodical in Poland and participated in the rest of the movement’s literary activities. In April 1939 Shalom immigrated to Israel and joined the “Avraham Group” of HaPoel Hamizrachi in Kfar Pines, where he overcame the ropes of joining the homeland and worked in the vegetable garden and orchards with the company in Netanya. On 28 Kislev, December 11, 1947, he went to Kfar Etzion after being absent from his home for two weeks because of the disruption of roads. The convoy was attacked. Shalom managed to catch a rifle of a fallen guard and to push the attackers off and hold out for the longest time until the ammunition ran out. Then the Arabs approached him and killed him. He left a wife and an 8-month-old child. From the eulogy of the World Zionist Organization, the Department for Youth and Hehaluts: “There was a dear man whose death was mourned by religious Zionism in Israel and the Diaspora..” On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was transferred to eternal rest, together with the rest of the victims of the Gush, to the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
