Kanfo, Chaim


Son of Zohary and Moshe. He was born in Tel Aviv on August 27, 1968. Chaim was the youngest son in his family. He completed his elementary education at the Dov Hoz School in Jaffa. Afterward, he studied in the junior high school “Jonah the Prophet” in Jaffa and at the “New High School” in Tel Aviv. He completed his education at the Ort Geula School in Tel Aviv, specializing in accounting and computer studies, and successfully passed his matriculation exams. He did not get the matriculation certificate. Haim was a member of the Scout movement and was active in sports, especially in soccer, first in soccer at the Bnei Brit club in Jaffa and later in the Neve Golan group. He also played basketball and table tennis. He excelled in high self-discipline, good manners, and a sense of humor. He was always sensitive to people and was making peace between rivals, appeasing and finding compromise. After completing his studies he wandered around Israel and stayed with his extended family. In October 1986, he enlisted in the IDF and was stationed at his request in a combat unit in the Armored Corps, where he served as a driver of the Merkava tank, which served until his dying day and stood out for his friends and willingness to help others at any time. IDF forces in the security zone in Lebanon. The battle went on all day and all night, and in the morning the force with which Chaim had ordered us to open the road where our forces were moving. The tank in which he lived led to a powerful bomb planted on the way and made up of mines and bombs. The explosion killed Haim. On the 8th of Cheshvan 5748 (8.11.1987) he fell in battle in Lebanon. He was buried in the military cemetery in Holon. Survived by his parents, brother and sister – Danny and Liz. After his death, his family members sent a bundle of eulogy and appreciation for his memory. In a letter of condolence to the parents, the unit commander wrote, among other things: “Life, kindness, a smile on his lips, he always knew how to entertain his friends in the unit, even in the wee hours of the night, even when the work was longer … A tank crew member dedicated to his work and his friends, Quickly and professionally … We just loved Haim, and we will miss him very much, both for the soldiers and for the commanders. ” A Torah library was established in the Brit Shalom Synagogue in Jaffa.
