Kahane, Saul
Shaul, son of Sarah and Chaim, was born on April 2, 1951, in Haifa.Shaul was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early October 1969. He volunteered for the Armored Corps and after training at the Armored Corps School, was ordained as a tank commander, and his commanders tried to persuade him to attend an officer’s course. In spite of his refusal, his officers regarded him as equal among equals, and shared him in discussions and decisions concerning various operations, and even assigned him responsibilities parallel to the burden of responsibility for officer duties, while Shaul was still a soldier. He wrote home and spent much of his vacation Villa presence of his family. One of his close friends, who was at home in Saul’s parents, said: “I’ve never heard him raise a voice in, or speaks rudely to parents. “Shaul saw the need to continue his studies in order to ensure his future: After being discharged from compulsory military service with the rank of First Sergeant, he was accepted to the Faculty of Economics at the University of Haifa without any difficulty, While serving in the Golan Heights, in fierce winter and under difficult conditions. After a year of studies at the University of Haifa, he decided that he “can not afford this luxury” of study only. During school he worked for IBM. And to work in this company he moved to Tel Aviv and studied in a computer course. After completing the course, he was accepted to work in the profession and passed the exams at the university. A strong willpower was Saul and when he presented himself with a challenge, he would always achieve his goal. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Shaul hurried to join the fighting forces without receiving a summons. So he did not fight in his brigade but in an armored unit in the northern sector of the Golan Heights. For nearly a week he participated in the bitter battles until, on the day of the 16th of Tishrei 5740 (12 October 1973), his tank was hit directly by a battle near Mazra’at Beit Jann, and he was killed on the spot. He was brought to eternal rest in the Haifa cemetery
