After completing his studies, he remained for only about a year until his enlistment in the IDF, and he used her for work in the metalworking workshop and in the evenings he studied at the Institute for External Studies of the Hebrew Technion in Haifa. Shmuel enlisted in the IDF in late October 1967, and in recognition of his duty to the homeland and his aspiration to contribute in all his abilities and abilities, volunteered for an aviation course. Despite the arduous efforts of the course, he devoted all his time on vacations to his friends. After a year in an aviation course, he moved to a field unit in a position that involved flights and high risk. Already in his early days in his new unit, the commanders knew his qualities and his abilities and placed him in the most responsible positions – and he would fill them with calm and responsibility as he always did. He had shown a great deal of wisdom and initiative, and he had done his job with great success and did not disappoint.
