Iyov, Avtalion


Was born on 15.7.1919 in the city of Miro, Russia, and in 1923 immigrated to Israel with his family. After attending elementary and high school he worked in diamond polishing. He joined the Etzel underground and was known as “Sergeant Yoav” during the struggle against the White Paper regime and the drowning of the Struma and Patria refugee ships. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and at the end of the winter of 1948, when the British were preparing to leave the country and transfer him to Israel, They transferred their equipment near the port, and transferred their most important prisoners, including him, to safety in the Atlit camp. Avtalyon managed to escape from there and after a night of lodging in the house he went back to the operations. He took part in an Irgun attack on a military ammunition train that was stopped by the explosion of the locomotive in the mine near Pardes Hanna, where the attackers overcame the fighters of the Great Guard and the Haganah and took about 50 tons of ammunition and heavy weapons. (April 17, 1948), three British soldiers and three members of the Irgun and Ayov Avtalion fell among them, and was brought to eternal rest with military honor in the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
