Israel, Walter


Son of Irma and Dr. Max was born on March 25, 1921 in Hamburg, Germany, where he studied at a private elementary school and afterwards in a gymnasium in high school. In 1941 he volunteered for the British Army and was assigned to the Transport Company of the Water Transport Company 148. In 1943, he participated in the attack on the eighth camp in the Western Desert and progressing from El Alamein to Tripoli, Lieutenant) in the transport company 178. In January 1945 he moved with his company to the Jewish Brigade. In his former units and in the brigade he was known for his devotion, energy, enthusiasm and responsibility. He was meticulous about order and accuracy, and he was known as a good and generous friend. At the end of the Second World War, he took part in the help given by the Palestine soldiers to She’erit HaPleita in Europe. On 1 Av, July 11, 1945, he traveled to remove Jewish survivors from the Dachau concentration camp, and when he passed by a wooden bridge near the city, he was killed on the spot trying to retrieve the body of a Jewish soldier who had been killed the same day. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Udna, Italy. He was survived by a father, and his name was immortalized in the “Jewish Brigade Book.” 2.
