Israel, Abraham


Son of Roza (Shoshana) and Rahamim was born in 1926 in Turkey. He studied at the Talmud Torah and at a public school. After graduating he went to work in a metal factory, but found no satisfaction in his work and his wages, because his soul yearned for a full Jewish life and national freedom. In 1945 he immigrated to Israel and settled in a copper casting factory. He was absorbed in the life of the Yishuv and in the aspirations of the nation’s liberation. When the War of Independence broke out, he could no longer continue his work with peace of mind. He volunteered to defend the homeland and asked to be sent to the front soon. He joined the Palmach regiment in the Negev Brigade and was sent to the southern front, fought valiantly and devotedly and even took a short vacation to visit the city, not to waste the precious time devoted to the war of the people. The Egyptians, who rushed to the aid of local gangs, on May 11, 1948. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
