Hordi, Shlomo

Shlomo, son of Sarah and Mashiach Hordi, was born in 1901 in Russia. As a child, his parents were taken from him and with the help of his relatives, he moved to Iran. At age 16 Shlomo set out on foot, through Iraq and Lebanon and in 1934 managed to reach Palestine illegally and settled in Tel Aviv and established a family. The love of the homeland and the building of the land were at the top of his concerns and in this spirit he also educated his children. He belonged to the Haganah and was active in security in his place of residence. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Shlomo immediately volunteered and served in the “Kiryati” Brigade. He held many defense positions within the boundaries of Tel Aviv. On the 29th of Adar II 5708 (April 9, 1948), while standing guard at one of the extremist positions, he was hit by the Arab murderers’ bullet and fell. Shlomo was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
