Hollander, Yoseph


Son of Rosa and Yitzhak, was born on29 Iyar, May 31, 1927 in the city of Nitra, Czechoslovakia to pious parents. He studied both religious and secular studies in the famous local Yeshiva and Gymnasium. In June 1947 he arrived in Israel and immediately joined the Haganah. He did not devote much time to his civic profession, because he accepted the call of the homeland, but he prepared the ground for his parents’ immigration. Although he was no longer alive when they arrived. Yosef served in the “Alexandroni” Brigade, with courage and combat qualities. He took part in various bold actions: breaking into Jaffa, infiltrating the Tel Litvinsky camp, blowing up a bridge on the way to Lod and releasing the road to Haifa. In the last battle of Tantura, on the 14th of Iyar 5708 (23.5.1948), Yoseph was wounded twice, first on foot and then in the neck, while he was helping the wounded, under enemy fire, and he fell. Yoseph was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
