Hirsch, Yehiel (Fishel)

Ben Berman and Perla (Paulina). He was born on the 5th of Sivan 5704 (June 5, 1943) in the city of Iasi, Romania. In 1965 he was drafted into the IDF. After basic training he joined the Armored Corps and was employed as a driver of the armored infantry unit. In this role he also served in the Six-Day War. Immediately after that war, the time for his release from the regular service came. But he was to serve many periods of active reserve service. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he was one of the first to leave his unit before he could break his fast. He fell in the course of his duty – on the 16th of Av 5764 (August 4, 1974). He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. Survived by a wife, parents and brother. Fischel’s commander wrote to the widow: “There was no soldier in the unit who did not know Yehiel z” l, thanks to his personal qualities. Was more devoted to his unit than was acceptable. He was cheerful and kind, and you could not be sad with him. Was loved by all – commanders and soldiers alike. His role in the unit was exemplary, and I do not remember, not once, that Yehiel complains about something. “
