Hillel, David

Hillel, David

Son of Shimon and Feia. He was born on September 20, 1951, in Moshav Gilat in the Negev, and when he was about 6, his family moved to Be’er Sheva. He studied at Ma’alot Elementary School and, despite successfully passing the survey, decided to continue in a vocational school and study a profession. For two years he studied plumbing at the Roosevelt Vocational High School in Be’er Sheva and during his studies was an active member of the Gadna. After graduating he began to work in his profession, but did not see him as a blessing and began to work in the “Solel Boneh” as a scribe. He would give most of his salary to his parents. From the age of 15 David used to donate blood every year, which indicates his kindness and love of others. David enlisted in the IDF in mid-May 1970 and after basic training he completed a driver’s course and served alternately as a driver and a non-commissioned officer. He was an excellent soldier, a good driver and an excellent professional. The commander of the Negev region in the Israel Police even praised his control of the vehicle and David’s coolness. In one case, the vehicle he was driving lost his brakes and David did not get confused, got off the road, continued driving in the field between parked cars and managed to maneuver his car without damaging the car. On the 23rd of Adar 5723 (February 23, 1973), Sergeant David fell in the line of duty and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Be’er Sheva. His family donated a Torah scroll and a memorial lamp in his memory, which were placed in the Beit Yosef synagogue in Be’er Sheva; His name was immortalized in the “Magen Shlomo” synagogue (named after his childhood friend, Shlomo Uzan who fell in the Suez Canal) in Moshav Gilat.
