Hilborn, Shimon


Son of Yaffa and Zvi, was born in Nesher on July 13, 1929. He studied at the elementary school, went on a tour as a child and liked sports, and when he was a boy he began to work in a factory and was a member of the Histadrut. He joined the Haganah in 1947. He completed a commanding officer course and was active. When the War of Independence broke out, he participated in battles in the Galilee, Yehiam, Ramat Yochanan, a-Zeib and Jenin. As a sign of appreciation for courage, he received from his commander the book “The Legacy of Heroism.” As a commander, he could inspire trust in the elderly. Shimon fell in battle on Birva on the 17th of Sivan 5708 (24.6.1948). The village of Birwa and the three outposts next to it were held by our forces. On the afternoon of June 23, local Kaukji and Arab forces attacked the village and forced the force to withdraw, and at night, a force from the Carmeli Brigade organized and attacked the village on the 24th of June. During the day, the battle continued and the Carmeli forces repulsed enemy attacks on the outpost they were in. During the night the force was strengthened, attacked again and succeeded in conquering the village and the regiments, and fell to help a wounded friend, who died at the age of 19.
