Hert, Salomon
Born in London and during World War I, he volunteered in England for the Jewish Legion – the 38th Battalion of the King’s Wings. Together with his battalion he arrived in Eretz Israel to participate in the conquest of the Turks. He participated in battles on the way to Nablus and in the battle for the conquest of the Jordan River. In October 1918, the battalion commanded by John Patterson conducted an arduous journey from A-Salat to Jerusalem accompanied by Turkish prisoners and many soldiers fell ill with fever. About twenty of the battalion’s soldiers died in the ailments, among them Salomon. He passed away on 10 Cheshvan, 16 October 1918 and was brought to eternal rest in the British military cemetery in Ramle.
