Hershkowitz, Yosef (Yossi)
Son of Amalia and Aryeh, was born in 1924 in the city of Bacau, Romania, and in 1944 immigrated to Eretz Israel. He had earned a high school education abroad, and he knew that there was no room for Jews in the Diaspora. As a member of Hashomer Hatzair, he joined the Kibbutz Reshefim and stayed there for two years. In 1946 he left the kibbutz to become a teacher. He took a preparatory course to enter the teachers’ seminary in Jerusalem and made a living as a laborer. His permanent residence was a city of gardens. He was a member of the Haganah since his arrival in Israel. At the beginning of 1948 he enlisted and served in the Carmeli Brigade and participated in the defense of the Shavei Zion and the Tarshiha conquest. He fell in the defense of Mughar in the Western Galilee. During the fighting, he was wounded in the leg and could not retreat with the retreating soldiers. Only after the cease-fire, on the 17th of Tammuz 5707 (July 24, 1948), was a man killed in the field. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. He left behind a wife
