Hershkowitz, Yehoshua


The only son of Joseph and Rebecca. He was born on September 1, 1948, in the city of Litomice, Czechoslovakia. When Yehoshua was one year old, the family immigrated to Israel and settled in Ashkelon, but since the absorption areas were difficult and the school was not suitable, the family moved to Jerusalem. When the time came, the boy began to visit the Neve Ya’akov religious elementary school, He completed his high school studies at the Marom-Zion yeshiva. Due to the difficult condition of the family, Joshua wandered with his parents to the United States, where he was then 15. But a year later, the son’s longing for the country increased, and he found no peace until his father returned with him to Jerusalem, but his father found solace in his son He was very modest and polite and was prepared to do everything he was asked to do, even when he was drafted into the IDF, ready to take on difficult and dangerous tasks. He waited impatiently for the draft order to come, for how much to fulfill his duty to his people. He served in the Armored Corps, but only served for half a year, during the course of his service on the 28th of Tevet 5727 (9.1.1967) he fell near the Syrian border. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. On the first anniversary of his death, his father established a Torah library in his name in the synagogue in the German Colony in Jerusalem, where Joshua prayed; He also donated a chandelier to the same synagogue.
