Hershkowitz, Nathan (Nico)


Son of Rivka and Jean, was born on the 5th of Tishrai, August 13, 1926, in Bucharest, Romania. In 1944 he succeeded in immigrating to Israel aboard the “Maritza.” On December 3, 1947, Yaakov joined the army and served in the “Kiryati” brigade. He served in the defense of Bat Yam and in the conquest of Jaffa, and was sent to a naval training course and was called again for combat duty. With his comrades-in-arms, Yaakov was sent to open the “Burma Road” to Jerusalem. On the 29th of Iyar, 5708 (7.6.1948),Yaakov set out to replace a squad at the Beit Sussin outpost and was hit by a shrapnel and fell. He was buried in Na’an. On the 2nd of Sivan 5705 (18.5.1950) Yaakov was transferred to eternal rest to the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
