Hershkowitz, Eliyahu
Eliyahu, the only son of Saly and Menashe Hershkowitz, was born on July 30, 1923, in the city of Braila, Romania. His father, a veteran Zionist, educated him on the values of Hebrew culture and language. When he was ten, he immigrated with his parents to Israel, and soon became one of the children of the country. He was a member of the Gordonia movement and contributed much of his spirit to the development of this movement. Sent as reinforcements to Gush Etzion after the large attack on the Gush on January 14, 1948, fighters departed from Hartuv on the night of January 15-16 and were loaded with weapons, ammunition and equipment. Due to the late hour of departure and the difficulties of the road, they could not reach Gush Katif in the night. The Arabs of the area surrounded them. The fighters organized themselves on one of the hills (the “Battle Hill” today) and fought with the masses of Arabs until they all fell in battle on the 5th of Shevat 5708 (January 16, 1948). Eliyahu was brought to a mass grave in Kfar Etzion. On 17.11.11 1949, along with the rest of the victims of the Gush, Eliyahu was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
