Herschel, Aaron

Son of Hanna and Yosef Shmuel. He was born in 1850 in Hungary, and his father, a learned Torah scholar and rabbi, was a rabbi in the city of Svad, Hungary, and when he immigrated to Eretz Israel he was one of the leaders of Kollel Ungerin. The year 1873 was a rainy year that filled every cistern in the courtyards of the houses, and the Jewish residents of the city did not have to buy water at full cost from the Arabs of the village of Silwan. The Arabs, who saw their livelihood drop from their hands, began to raid Jewish homes, rob them and steal their property. On 1 Tevet 5673 (January 1873), a few Arabs broke into the family’s home. Aharon stopped studying, chased them, and tried to catch them, and the Arabs, who were afraid that they would be identified by him, shot him. On the 5th of Tevet 5713 (5.1.1873) he died of his wounds and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. He left a widow, daughter, parents and brothers.
