Hermel, Akiva


Son of Sarah and Yaakov Was born the 16th of Tevet, January 5, 1931 in the city of Wolovec, Czechoslovakia, and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1934. The family settled in Bnei Brak. In January 1948 Akiva enlisted, served in the “Carmeli” Brigade, and was sent to Hanita and Haifa and was among the escorts of the convoys to the Western Galilee. He later took part in combat operations in Akko and Samaria and its environs. In the battle for Jenin, Akiva took over command after his commanders fell and was one of the first to enter the city. He fell in battle for Jenin on the 25th of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948). On 20 Av 5710 (3.8.1950), he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem
