Herman, Gabi


Son of George Hacohen and Miriam. Born on 4 May 1957 in Timisora, Romania, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1959. He attended the Kishon Elementary School in Haifa and completed high school in that city.
Gabi was a sociable boy, and his circle of acquaintances and friends was great because of his love of people and his ability to call those around him. He was an ardent sports enthusiast and was an outstanding footballer. In his youth he studied violin and progressed quickly and with great success in his musical studies. He was a vigorous, courageous, ambitious boy. He loved and cherished his parents, and as an only child he had a relationship of loyalty and dedication, love and concern for his father and mother. Friend Avi says: “Gabi spread a love of life around him, and his sense of humor captivated everyone, he was tall and broad-shouldered, but at the same time modest and gentle.” Gabi was drafted into the IDF in August 1975. After completing his basic training, he was assigned to a police-military unit as a prisoner’s guide and served as a company sergeant, and he was known in the unit as a good, quiet and disciplined soldier . He played his part with devotion and deliberated among his co-workers. He did not spare any effort and personally initiated anything to do with his work. “After his regular service, Gabi intended to join the permanent army. On the 27th of Sivan 5737 (11.6.1977) Gabi fell during his service. He was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. After his death he was promoted to First Sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “I was proud to be the commander of your son, Gabi z” l. He was a good guy and a good soldier, and it’s a pity he’s no longer with us. ”
