Heiman, Joseph


Yosef, son of Rosa and Yona, was born on 21.4.1947 in Wroclaw, Poland. He immigrated to Israel with his family in 1950 and attended elementary school and the Chabad High School in Jaffa. Joseph was an excellent student, though not overly diligent, and often won prizes for his academic achievements. He was also a sports fan and excelled in various sports, especially swimming, and devoted much of his spare time to the hobby of photography. He loved the country and traveled a lot and toured Merhavia. Joseph was optimistic and Simcha, serious in his approach to life and friendship. He was always willing to help others, and was a loyal and devoted son to his parents. All his friends loved him and nicknamed him “Yossi”. While completing his studies, he worked in the computer industry. Yosef was drafted into the IDF in early 1965. He completed his training course in the Armored Corps and after completing his basic training he completed a course in tank-related professions, took part in a training course and was assigned to an armored unit. And an excellent professional, and according to his commander he was brave and devoted to his job, acceptable to the soldiers of the unit and stood out in his willingness to help his comrades. He participated in the war in 1967 and was awarded the “Six Day War”. During his service in the Israel Defense Forces, his father was killed in a car accident and his family’s livelihood fell on Yossi, so he was discharged from the regular service early, but he was often called for reserve service during the Yom Kippur War. On the 24th of Tishrei 5734 (October 24, 1973) Yosef fought as a liaison officer in the armored personnel carrier, in the battle that took place in the city of Suez. In the first fire that struck his force, many fighters were wounded, including the company commander and the commander of the armored personnel carrier, who continued to shoot at the enemy, directing the APC driver to rescue the wounded from the inferno. During the rescue, Yosef was injured and fell. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Holon. He left behind a wife and son, mother, brother and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and he received a commendation from the commander of the command.
