Hatzav (Steinerberger), Yehuda


Yehuda Chatzav, son of Chana Leah and Zvi Ze’ev Steinbrecher, was born on January 2, 1927, in the town of Zharki, Poland. When he was seven, he immigrated with his family to Israel. He graduated with a certificate of excellence and received a scholarship to high school, but decided to move to agricultural training “to work the land. After a year he left Masuot Yitzhak to help his mother in Tel Aviv. In the morning he distributied the “Davar” newspaper , during the day he studied leadership, and in the evening he studied bookkeeping,

Yehuda was a member of the Haganah and at the outbreak of the War of Independence he was active in the People’s Guard. After a short time he enlisted in the Kiryati Brigade and served as a cultural symbol in his unit. He participated in the conquest of Jaffa and Sarafand, was among the defenders of the place. Yehuda fell in the Arab attack on Sarafand onthe 4th of Sivan, June 11, 1948 and was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
