Halfon, Pinchas

Pinchas, son of Amos and Zola, was born on 19.4.1928 in Tripoli, Libya, to a family of Shochrei-Zion rabbis. From early childhood he aspired to immigrate to Israel. Pinchas arrived on foot to Tunis, amidst desert dangers and Arab rioters. From Tunis he found his way to France and finally arrived in Israel at the height of the War of Independence. Pinchas joined the IDF and went to Jerusalem with the auxiliary companies and the armored corps, served in a heavy mortar unit, was very friendly and especially cared for his exiles and distributed his military salary with them. He fought like a hero in the difficult battles for Jerusalem, and said that he wanted to see ancient Jerusalem but it did not happen. While he was performing his duties on the 23rd of Tammuz 5709 (20.7.1949) Pinchas fell and was buried in the cemetery in Sheikh Bader B and on the 17th of Sivan 5761 (21.6.1951) ) was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
